2012-2013 Leadership Project

The 2012-2013 Leadership Academy focused their project on "Mentoring Our Members to Effective Leadership." To view this Power Point, click here.  The focus of this project was to mentor the next generation of great ASCLS leaders.  Those leaders are already here amongst us and not is the time to help them grow.  Mentoring can provide these potential leaders with the knowledge, confidence and support that they need to step into leadership positions. Great mentors can mold and shape great mentees through structured teaching and sharing experiences

The 2012-13 Class presented their project at the 2013 ASCLS Annual Meeting in Houston and their full presentation is available by clicking here.

2010-2011 Leadership Project

The 2010-11 Leadership Academy created the "Bringing the Leadership Academy to You" for use at the Regional and State levels.

The entire contents for this training was provided on CD to all Constituent Society Presidents, Region Directors, ASCLS Leadership Development Committee (LDC) members and Leadership Academy graduates. Please contact your state president to access this information for use or contact us at ascls@ascls.org.  You can also access the materials by clicking here

Below is the introductory information for the project and the table of contents for the available teaching materials.

BRINGING THE ASCLS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY TO YOU!

Rationale and Background

Some ASCLS constituent societies have struggled to find competent and willing persons to step into leadership positions in recent years. This is not an unusual situation in volunteer professional organizations and this concern has been a frequent topic of conversation at ASCLS Board of Directors meetings. The typical responses when these concerns were voiced was to throw the responsibility back to the states with suggestions of developing mentoring programs, expanding membership numbers to expand the pool of potential leaders, or to provide more support to current leaders and members so that the prospect of serving the organization would not be too overwhelming.

In 2006, the ASCLS BOD felt that this was not an adequate response to these continuing concerns and that we could not rely on states that were already struggling to find leaders to ‘grow their own leaders'. We decided that we must provide a structured program at the national level focusing on developing leadership skills and the ASCLS Leadership Academy was born. The program is designed to invest in the future of ASCLS by focusing on developing leadership skills in persons to serve at the local and state level. Once our leaders are established at these levels, they will naturally step into leadership positions at the regional and national levels.

The stated goals of the ASCLS Leadership Academy are:

  • To identify members with potential to become leaders in ASCLS and invest time, energy, and resources in their growth and development.
  • To provide these high-potential leaders with skills required to step into leadership positions within ASCLS.
  • To energize and grow ASCLS through strong leadership at all levels of the organization.
  • To increase the future leaders' knowledge of ASCLS.

The Leadership Academy was designed to provide benefits to both the participants as well as ASCLS. During the year-long program, the participants will develop skills that can be transferred to the work setting and life in general, benefit from opportunities to learn from and dialogue with ASCLS leaders and to be mentored by these ASCLS leaders and acquire the confidence and self-esteem to step into varied leadership roles. In return for their commitment of personal and financial resources, ASCLS will reap benefits as well. Strong leaders will make ASCLS a strong organization and will help to shape the future of the organization and the profession at large. Active and effective leaders increase passion for ASCLS locally, regionally, and nationally and provide a mechanism to develop and grow members who can work on important initiatives for ASCLS. A successful program is also an attractive member benefit and should increase interest and membership in ASCLS.

To participate in the year-long ASCLS Leadership Academy, persons must make a significant personal effort, time, and financial commitment. They must attend activities prior to two consecutive ASCLS Annual Meetings as well as participate in those 4-day meetings, and attend the ASCLS Legislative Symposium and activities prior to that meeting. They must be available for conference calls, set aside time for preparation and follow up activities for those sessions and participate in developing and producing a group project for the benefit of ASCLS. While there is no fee for the Academy itself, participants must accept costs related to registration, travel and lodging for two Annual Meetings and the annual Legislative Symposium.

30 members have graduated from the ASCLS Leadership Academy program so far. We are pleased that 24 different states and 9 of 10 ASCLS Regions are represented by these graduates in 5 classes. A recent survey of Leadership Academy graduates show that the vast majority continue to be active at the state level and are increasingly accepting leadership positions at the regional and national level as well.

While we feel that the ASCLS Leadership Academy program continues to meet the goals it was designed to address, important questions remain:

  • Are there other ways to give potential ASCLS leaders the skills they need to serve the organization at the local, state, regional and national level?
  • Is there a way to ‘package' LA curriculum/activities so that regions/states/local societies can use the materials to encourage leadership development in even more individuals?
  • Can we make leadership development programs similar in content and scope to those in the ASCLS Leadership Academy available to those who cannot commit to the national program due to employment, financial and/or personal constraints?
  • How can we "BRING THE ASCLS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY TO YOU?”

These are the questions that the 2010-2011 Class of the ASCLS Leadership Academy addressed in this project. The main goal is to encourage ASCLS regions and constituent societies to provide leadership development programs at the grassroots level by gathering curriculum information, presentations, activities, and other resources and describing possible formats/models for these programs. They hope that their work will make planning and presenting leadership development topics an easy process and will increase the likelihood that it will become a reality.

2009-2010 Leadership Project

The 2009-10 Leadership Academy created two items to help constituent societies build leaders and promote the profession.

Below are links to both.

An ASCLS Perspective: Become the Face of the Profession

This short video, based on the infamous "pink glove" video from 2009, is designed to be a fun resource for "Providing the Face" of the profession.

ASCLS Awareness Guide for State Presidents and Region Directors

This PowerPoint presentation is designed to provide a month by month "at a glance” guide for activities, events, and reminders for ASCLS members to utilize.
This guide can be used by all members at the local, state, and national level, but is especially designed for distribution from state presidents and regional directors.
Within the presentation you will find information and links to online resources for Government Affairs, NMLPW, Awards, Scholarships, Leadership Development, Membership, and more.

2011-2012 Leadership Project

The 2011-12 Leadership Academy created the "Customizing Your ASCLS Recruiting Strategy" for use at the Regional and State levels.

Using the 2011-2012 Leadership Academy Recruitment Project

Have you hesitated to approach a colleague about becoming an ASCLS member because you can’t find the right words?

The 2011-2012 Leadership Academy has developed materials to help you with recruiting new ASCLS members based on using concise statements (elevator speeches) directed at the prospective member’s career position and the most likely benefits of ASCLS membership that will appeal to them. They have developed a tool that can be used to feel comfortable in recruiting new members and will allow customization of your approach to each individual.

The 2011-12 Class presented their project at the 2012 ASCLS Annual Meeting and some of the tools are available below.

2008-2009 Leadership Project

The 2008-09 Leadership Academy created two leadership development kits to help constituent societies build leaders. Below are links to both kits.

Building Blocks Towards Leadership Kit

This kit is designed to be a resource for leadership development. Within the kit you will find numerous presentations on important topics for potential leaders. These presentations can be used as is and some contain speaker notes to aid the presenter. Download the User Guide and Introduction first to help guide you through the use of the kit.

H.E.L.P. in a Book: Help Explaining Leadership Positions

This kit is designed to be a resource for educating newer members about the duties of state officer positions.
Within the kit you will find numerous presentations on three important state officer roles.

Below you will find information and templates to use for each leader position that supplement items found in the notebook. Each is a general outline, as procedures and schedules vary from state to state, and may be modified as needed.

In addition, each pertinent section of the notebook is also available to download instead of downloading the entire notebook.
